Aims and Purposes

Our main aim and purpose is to provide a child centred, non-confrontational, caring and supportive, integrated care and educational service for children whose educational needs cannot currently be met within a mainstream school and whose social welfare needs cannot currently be met.

We also:

  • aim to reintegrate within mainstream education whenever circumstances permit
  • provide expertise and services for young people with developmental, learning and behavioural difficulties
  • commit training and resources to staff development to enhance our current levels of expertise in managing a range of special educational needs and developmental disorders including the needs of young people with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD)/Asperger Syndrome and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • provide a broad and balanced educational programme, including the National Curriculum suitably adapted and modified to address basic needs, gaps in education and promote each child's further development
  • provide opportunities for gaining a variety of external accreditation and encourage each child to reach his potential in gaining such accreditation
  • provide, implement, monitor and review an Individual Education Plan for each child that addresses his particular education difficulties and provides strategies for remediating these difficulties
  • provide a care programme that enables each child to develop self help, independence and recreational skills and that assists him in forming positive and appropriate relationships with peers and adults
  • provide, implement, monitor and review an Individual Care Plan for each child that addresses his difficulties in coping skills and provides strategies for remediating these difficulties
  • provide a behaviour framework, within which each child is helped to take responsibility for his own behaviour and can learn to manage it more effectively
  • maintain a safe, positive and caring environment through an agreed set of rules and sanctions and through the rewarding of positive behaviour
  • promote good health through diet, exercise, personal care and appropriate medical checks and intervention
  • provide opportunities to develop self-esteem and confidence
  • value all cultures, religions and abilities and avoid all forms of discrimination
  • respect the basic rights of all students and staff and promote an anti-abusive environment
  • encourage all members of staff to be appropriate role models and practise reflective practice
  • promote the school Code of Conduct
  • promote successful experiences, achievements and enjoyment
  • promote and maintain good communication with parents and guardians to underpin a student's placement
